Heuristic Optimization of Thinning Individual Douglas-Fir

چکیده
Research Highlights: (1) Optimizing mid-rotation thinning increased modeled land expectation values by as much 5.1–10.1% over a representative reference prescription on plots planted at 2.7 and 3.7 m square spacings. (2) Eight heuristics, five of which were newly applied to selecting individual trees for thinning, produced prescriptions near identical quality. (3) Based heuristic sampling properties, we introduced variant the hero with 5.3–20% greater computational efficiency. Background Objectives: Thinning, is arguably most subjective human intervention in life stand, commonly executed limited decision support tree selection. This study evaluated heuristics’ ability selection factorial experiment that considered method, density, age, rotation length. Materials Methods: The Organon growth model was used financial optimization even age Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) harvest rotations consisting single followed clearcutting high-productivity site. We two versions heuristic, four Monte Carlo heuristics (simulated annealing, record-to-record travel, threshold accepting, great deluge), genetic algorithm, tabu search their efficiency maximizing value. Results: With 50–75 years 4% discount rate, always other methods. computationally efficient required 2.8–3.4 times more computation than hero. algorithm 4.2–8.4 21–52 times, respectively, Conclusions: accuracy resulting quality stand measurement, yield models linked rather choice heuristic. However, performance may be sensitive chosen models.

متن کاملUnderstory Vegetation Responses to Initial Thinning of Douglas-fir Plantations Undergoing Conversion to Uneven-Age Management
Since the mid-1990’s, several studies have been undertaken to evaluate thinning treatments designed to promote development of complex forest structure in order to enhance ecological functioning and biological diversity. Most of these studies have focused on forest responses to one or possibly two thinning entries. In contrast, this study, the Unevenaged Management Project (UAMP), is evaluating ...
متن کاملEffects of mountain beaver management and thinning on 15-year-old Douglas fir growth and survival.
We examined 4-year growth of 15-year-old damaged and undamaged Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menzesii) after integrating temporary population reductions of mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa) with thinning in a pre-commercial hand-planted plantation in western Washington. Five treatment combinations were considered: (1) trapping mountain beavers in an unthinned area, (2) trapping before thinning to 65...
متن کاملForest Restoration Using Variable Density Thinning: Lessons from Douglas-Fir Stands in Western Oregon
A large research effort was initiated in the 1990s in western United States and Canada to investigate how the development of old-growth structures can be accelerated in young even-aged stands that regenerated following clearcut harvests, while also providing income and ecosystem services. Large-scale experiments were established to compare effects of thinning arrangements (e.g., spatial variabi...
متن کاملCorticolous bryophytes in managed Douglas-fir forests: habitat differentiation and responses to thinning and fertilization
Corticolous bryophytes, that is, mosses and liverworts that inhabit tree trunks, represent an important component of plant diversity in temperate ecosystems, but little is known of their ecology in managed forests. In this study, we quantified community composition and habitat differentiation of corticolous bryophytes in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) plantations subjected t...
